About the Artist

Robert Byron Gottschall is a master sculptor with over 50 years of practice in wood, stone, and bronze. Born in Los Angeles and shaped by formative years in Japan and Taiwan, his work bridges Eastern philosophy and Western figurative tradition. His sculptures are held in private collections, corporate institutions, and public spaces across the United States.

Gottschall's sculptures emerge from a deep philosophical engagement with material, form, and the natural world. Each piece is an act of listening — to the grain of the wood, the weight of stone, the memory held inside bronze. His work is not imposed upon its material; it is drawn out from within it.

The primary mediums are wood, stone, and bronze. Within those, Gottschall works with ancient woods, alabaster, marble, and foundry-cast bronze. Many works combine materials, allowing the conversation between substances to become part of the sculpture's meaning.

Gottschall has exhibited at Art Expo Los Angeles, Art Expo New York, the Mark Arts Museum in Wichita, and numerous gallery exhibitions across Aspen, Santa Fe, Taos, Houston, and Austin. His public commissions are permanently installed in Washington D.C., San Francisco, Albuquerque, and Las Vegas.

Collecting & Purchase

All acquisitions begin with a private conversation. We invite you to reach out directly to discuss available works, scale, placement, and suitability. Each transaction is handled personally — not through an impersonal storefront. Please use the inquiry form at the bottom of this page.

Works vary significantly based on material, scale, and complexity. Small-scale studio pieces begin in the mid-thousands. Monumental bronze works and major commissions are valued considerably higher. All pricing is available upon request in a private consultation.

The majority of Gottschall's work is one-of-a-kind. Select bronze works are available as limited editions of three to five castings, each numbered and accompanied by documentation. Wood and stone sculptures are always unique originals.

Gottschall's public commissions and exhibited works carry a documented exhibition history spanning five decades. Provenance, rarity, and the enduring quality of materials make these works considered additions to serious collections. We encourage prospective collectors to consult with an independent art advisor.

03

Commissions

Yes. Commissions are accepted on a selective basis. Gottschall has completed over a hundred commissioned works for private collectors, corporations, civic institutions, and public spaces. Each commission is approached as a collaboration rooted in dialogue and shared intention.

The commission process begins with a consultation to understand the site, the purpose, and the vision. From there, Gottschall develops preliminary studies and scale models before moving into full fabrication. Each stage involves close communication with the commissioning party.

Timeline depends on the scale and complexity of the work. Studio pieces may be completed in several months. Monumental bronze installations typically require one to two years from initial consultation through installation. A detailed schedule is provided at the outset of each engagement.

04

Installation & Logistics

Yes. We coordinate delivery and professional installation for all works. For large-scale and outdoor sculptures, we work with experienced art handlers and structural specialists to ensure each piece is placed with care and precision.

Many of Gottschall's works are designed specifically for outdoor siting. Bronze is ideally suited to exterior environments, developing a natural patina over time. Stone works are also appropriate for many outdoor settings. We assess site conditions as part of the consultation process.

Frequently. Gottschall has long-standing relationships with designers and architects who integrate his work into residential and institutional projects. We welcome early-stage collaboration to ensure the sculpture and its environment are conceived in dialogue.

Additional Information

Every work is accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity documenting the title, material, dimensions, year, and edition status where applicable. Provenance documentation is provided for all significant works.

Care varies by material. Bronze benefits from occasional waxing and protection from harsh chemicals. Stone should be kept clean and, in outdoor settings, sealed periodically. Wood sculptures should be kept from extreme moisture and direct prolonged sunlight. Detailed care instructions are provided with each work.

Private viewings can be arranged at the studio or at select locations by appointment. We believe that sculpture must be experienced in person — its scale, texture, and presence are not fully conveyed through photography. We encourage all serious collectors to arrange a visit.
